First found in Courtmacsherry, Cork where they were anciently seated, some say before the Anglo Norman invasion of Ireland by Strongbow in 1172.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Daniel McSherry who arrived in America in 1812; Joseph McSherry who arrived in South Carolina in 1831; Nathaniel Sherry, aged 30; who arrived in New York in 1677 and Roger Sherry who arrived in Maryland in 1671.
