On this page I'll will show you some of the ways in which I use to attract hedgehogs to my garden.

Although hedgehogs dont live in my garden they do visit everynight for the food that put out for them. My garden is on the edge of a housing estate joining onto acres of farm land and woodland.

Hedgehogs should be every gardeners friend. It eats many insect pests as it travels from garden to garden on its travels each night. So they should be encouraged to come into your garden.

When you start seeing a hedgehog in your garden coming regularly dont think you have only one. Chances are you may have has many as ten individuals.

Hedgehog Boxes

I have two hedgehog boxes in my garden at the moment. One is used to put the bowl of food in . And the other one has a infra red camera in which is connected to the video and tv which makes some interesting viewing some nights.

The food I put out for the hedgehog is Pedigree Chum dog food. Either original or chicken flavour. There is also a bowl of dried cat food and a bowl of water.

Compost Heaps

Compost Heaps are a good thing to have in your hedgehog garden. Not only can you recycle all of your garden waste on your compost heap. But it will be home to all of the creatures which make up the hedgehogs diet. And you can also put a hedgehog box in the bottom of the compost heap so the hedgehog has some where safe to spend the winter hibernating.

At the moment I am making a small compost heap into which I want to put a hedgehog box in side to try and get one to hibernate there this winter.

The picture above shows how to make a compost heap with one side removed to show a hedgehog box  in place. With the entrance to the box on the left and ventalation pipe coming away to the right all that needs doing now is to add some bedding for the winter, put the side back on the compost heap cover the hedgehog box with some water proof protection and start to fill with compost.

Log  Piles

Log piles do not have to be large.Stack the logs only two or three logs high with a gap in the bottom stack so the hedgehogs can get in side to get at the slugs and other insects which will also be inside.

Water

Water is very important in any wildlife garden. After eating the dry cat food in my garden the hedgehogs always enjoy a long drink.

Feeding hedgehogs

Hedgehogs live mostly on insects and other creatures that live on or just below the soil surface. Beetles such as cockchaferers, weevils and dung beetles are the commonest food, but earwigs, slugs, and caterpillars are almost as popular.

Their digestive systems have evolved to cope only with meat. So bread and milk is no good for them
The first way to a hedgehogs heart is through its stomach and nothing is better than a tin of cat or dog meat.I find dog food or cat food is both convenient and appreciated by the hedgehogs. The mushier the better. I use pedigree puppy food.
