Radiosurgery using gamma knife for brain and pituitary tumours, vascular malformations, facial pain, epilepsy.

Spinal cord tumour removal with lasers.

The development of microsurgical techniques for disc disorders and for acoustic neuromas.

The history and development of Neuroendoscopy.

Papers ond books on urodynamics and neuropathic bladder dysfunction.

Books published on surgical technique for operations on the spine and skull base and a bilingual book on the management of cerebral gliomas. Current research is into the effects of chemotherapeutic drugs on cell growth factors in gliomas.

MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY

Contemporary neurosurgery obtains its good results by operative approaches that are absolutely accurate, very small and minimally damaging to the tissues. To achieve this requires the use of microscopes, endoscopes and guidance or navigation systems in almost every operation.

Michael Torrens has university degrees in Anatomy, Medicine, Surgery and Philosophy from the Universities of London and Bristol. He has trained in both experimental and practical neurosurgery in Duke University, North Carolina, USA and in London, Oxford and Bristol, UK. For 14 years he was consultant neurosurgeon at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, UK and for the last 14 years consultant, and later head of clinic, in Athens at Hygeia Hospital, part of Harvard Medical International.
