About Savannahs

The Savannah is a relatively new breed of cat and is still in the process of development. The Savannah was formed by crossing an African Serval Tiger with a domestic shorthaired cat.
The Serval# is a grassland cat that hunts small rodents and birds on the African savannahs and this is where the Savannah has derived its name from.

The first breeding was in America, in the early 1980’s, then in 1994 a breeder named Joyce Sroufe produced her first litter of Savannahs and now there are Savannah breeders, not only in America but also Canada, Germany, Sweden, Austria, France, and of course U.K. In 2000 the Savannah breed was granted registration status with T.I.C.A. and then 2002 the breed was granted evaluation status.

Savannahs have a long body, long legs, long neck and large ears set on top of their head. The head is small in proportion to the body and is triangle in shape. The most common colour for the Savannah is a golden background with black or brown spots, but you will also get silver background with black or brown spots and black with black spots.

Savannahs have a very pleasant nature, and I have found them to be very intelligent and mischievous. They love to play in water, climb and jump and because of their long legs, they are very fast runners. They will follow you around the house more like a dog than a cat. Savannahs can be trained to walk on a leash, play fetch and will probably invent games for you to play with them.
